Client: Fortune 500 Manufacturing and Services Company
Coachee: President Europe Asia Middle East

Situation: Hard-driving leader in a successful business facing complex strategic challenges. Workaholic who had nearly resigned prior to the coaching programme due to overwork and lack of recognition. Coaching was provided as part of a package to retain him in the business and to increase his (already considerable) effectiveness. Very hands-on style.

What Graham did well

“Overall, I feel I have gained considerable benefit from our association. As someone who is not always the best at acting upon advice, I think one of your most effective approaches is to lead the discussion towards important aspects or considerations with a series of questions or open comments so I have found that I effectively reach my own conclusions but based upon the structure and direction that you have identified and then pursue. Personally, this is much more effective for me than having someone say you ought to do this, this and this, for example.

Your knowledge and experience in working with many senior executives over the years is clearly an asset and provides you with a series of reference points of behaviour and its effectiveness that are very helpful in considering the alternative approaches that I can take myself.

What were the results

“When I look back at our discussions I think we have gone quite quickly from the things that were concerning me personally to their root cause in terms of my leadership of the EAME team and what more we could accomplish together. I think this culminated (so far) in last week’s team workshop and follow up which I found extremely helpful and in some ways enlightening and I intend to make the findings the focus of the team’s go forward inter-relationship.”
